As a Club, we continually seek out opportunities to invest in our players, coaches and community. This aligns with our mission to develop great players and people to enhance the community we serve. We're proud of the like-minded Academy Select Coaching Staff and Directors, including the WKU Division One Soccer Coaching Staff, that have come together at SKY to provide the best possible development, experience and opportunities for our players.
We’re unbelievably excited to have Steve Henson now as our full time Director of Coaching and Strategic Adviser at SKY Soccer Club. This provides SKY Soccer Club a full time resource with experience and expertise that is rarely available to clubs our size.
Steve has been sharing his time for the last three years between a full time role as Executive Director of TUSC and Director of Coaching at SKY as a part of our partnership with TUSC. In his time with SKY, Steve has helped our Academy Select program double in size with nearly record participation compared to the last 10 years. Steve has brought a high level of professionalism and stability to the program, which has been matched on the field by our Coaching Staff to provide the best possible experience for our players and families. This has resulted in excellent participation and retention rates and the development of players and teams that are competing at higher levels of competition.
A true teacher at heart, originally from Houston, Steve Henson grew up in Madison, TN where he played youth soccer at Hendersonville Soccer League and graduated from Davidson Academy High School.
Steve went on to play four years of Division 1 College soccer at Western Kentucky University while earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education, Health and K-12 Teacher Certification followed by a Masters of Arts Degree in Education. Steve played 5 years of semi-pro soccer with the Nashville Metros in the USISL and A League divisions.
Steve has over 30 years of coaching experience at the youth, high school and college levels. He has also served for decades as an executive director and director of coaching at several youth clubs in different states. While working in public and private school systems, Steve has been a classroom teacher, an athletic director and a dean of students.
Steve holds multiple USSF coaching licenses, as well as national Coach and Club Director diplomas.
We couldn’t be more excited to make the investment in our club by having Steve as a full time resource for our coaches, players and their families. Our Director of Coaching, will create and implement the 9U/10U curriculum. This curriculum adheres to the program objectives of individual player focus. While each team will be assigned a head and assistant coaches, the DOC will serve as an age group trainer by conducting weekly practices.
This means that our youngest Academy players will receive weekly training directly from our DOC in concert with the teams’ awesome coaching staff. This is a unique opportunity for our players and just a part of our growth and development plans for our Academy and Academy Select players!
